It’s no secret that the energy filling Chicago’s Congress Theater was anything short of maximal. This was especially the case for last Friday’s sold out show with Los Angeles native Dillon Francis who co-headlined with Chicago’s own Flosstradamus. Anticipation was through the roof as local DJ Zebo finished up his opening set. As he left the stage, lights were cut and the everything was overcome with florescent blue lights followed by a thick layer of smoke.
While the intro to Flosstradamus’ own “Lana’s Theme” began to creep in, two heads appeared in the haze. After giving some love to their hometown, the bass dropped along with every jaw in the crowd. Their heavy trap and hip hop influenced set had every person in the theater going wild. After the conclusion of their set the floor appeared to clear out, but it was obvious that everyone began refueling for what was next to come. It wasn’t long before the lights dimmed, the crowd roared, and a stampede of IDGAFOS hats stormed the gate. As the first track dropped the LED screen became illuminated with cats, tacos, and an array of profanity. With a more than a positive response from the crowd, it was clear that Dillon Francis was happy to be back in Chicago. Given the love and support that this city has continued to show these artists, it goes without saying that Chicago left it’s mark on the ‘Wurld Turr.’ As always, special thanks to React Presents!
The man they call Dillon Francis drops off a brand spanking new remix he did to “Control Freak”. Opting to go the dark twisted route, Dillon says he was going for the “…weird Ed Banger vibe…” It’s definitely a dope remix and a breath of fresh air to the original, but as far as the whole Ed Banger vibe, I’m not that sure. I could definitely see the influence and thats about it. Nonetheless its a new bass heavy slower moombahton bomber that will get the crowd rocking as always.
The first days anticipation was at an all time high as the blue line approached Jackson so we could hop onto the Red to our final destination and enter the mother ship at Soldier Field. Being that it was my first actual festival that I got in legitimately I was mad hyped that I didn’t even notice the hordes of scantily clad neon bodies filling the train and roads leading to the Spring Awakening Music Festival. I couldn’t register or even start to comprehend that I was going to rage out to sounds of Bart B More, A-Trak, Dillon Francis and Skrillex all in one day; then come back the next day to rebuild and then destroy myself once again to the incredible sounds of Will Joy, Diplo, Shermanology, Felix Cartal, DIPLO and Moby! What a feeling. As Soldier Field peeked out from behind the Field Museum, literally looking like a space ship had landed on the lake front, sending out messages to the thousands making the pilgrimage to SAMF.
The aftermath of what was the Spring Awakening Music Festival still reverberates within my collective EDM soul. As I close my eyes the bass kicks, the treble spits, bright and shiny sun rays pound down on thousands of neon clad bodies, love mixed with a few other herbal essences in the air and the absolute grandness and uniqueness of the venue made for an experience like no other. Yes you can go to Lollapalooza, Pitchfork, and the countless other outdoor events in Chicago this summer but who can say they raged out to Skrillex in the rain on the 50th yard line of Soldier Field… well I know of a few thousand that did and we all got a story to tell, so sit back as you part take on my journey through my words and the visuals of Zach into the house of EDM at the Spring Awakening Music Festival.

Now I’ve searched the interwebs trying to find out more info on this mash-up to no avail, but this track is too good not to share because of that. The way Defend NoLibs sprinkled Dorrough’s voice over Dillon Francis’ track illustrates a melody and magic dynamic that makes this mash-up shine so bright. At first listen I wasn’t impressed yet the next day “I.D.G.A.F…I done came up!…I Don’t Give A FCUK” was running on repeat in my mind the entire day until I had to go and play it again (and again). Now that I’m hooked I figured I’d pass it on to all you incredible peoples as the moto to live by when life goes sour. Sing it with me!

Dillon Francis and Scion AV bring you the official music video for “I.D.G.A.F.O.S.”. Scion AV documents as Dillon goes deep into his creative process and his inspiration for his music. Daily viewings of cats and shopping for ham are just the few things that separate this “cat” from the rest of the bunch. Watch as he literally goes H.A.M. on the crowd!
