miami-music-week

Miami Music Week is fast upon us and the IMF team can hardly wait to join the 300,000 strong Electronic Music Fam in Miami next week. Kicking off this Friday with Week 1 of the Ultra Music Festival and continuing through the week into Weekend 2 of Ultra, fans will have no trouble finding events and tunes to meet their musical tastes. There will be no lull between the two festival weekends as the week days are jam packed with pool parties and late night club shows that are sure to be filled to the brink with teeny weeny bikinis and skin tight dresses. We advise you to sleep while you can because the city will be getting no shut eye come Friday.

While some of you might have had your week planned months ago. We want to help those that are behind in their planning game by narrowing down some of our top picks. As we won’t be making our touchdown in MIA Thursday morning the 2nd leg of the week is where you will find us basking in the sun to the sounds of our favorite artists. Scope our itinirary below and pop in to the events to play with the IMF fam. If you are heading in for leg 1 scope the full schedule here.

Now lets get down to business.

Big Gigantic
Denver’s electro-jam duo Big Gigantic kicked off Sunday in a huge way under the beating Miami sun for a early afternoon set at the Live Stage. Dropping a handful of hits off their latest album, Nocturnal, as well as a few remixes from hip-hop all stars like Kanye’s “Get Em High”. The set was especially spine-tingling because about 45 minutes before Dominic and Jeremy went on stage, IMF had the opportunity to sit down with them and talk about their take on their unique sound, the new and improved stage set-up, and Ultra itself. Hit the jump for the video of the interview and the final recap of Ultra Music Festival 2012!

12th Planet & Skrillex
Minutes after Zeds Dead finished their set, 12th Planet jumped on the decks and surprised the UMF Brasil stage’s crowd by doing an impromptu hour back-to-back set with Skrillex. After watching Skrillex blast off in front of 20,000+ fans the night before, we knew we were in for another ride.”Breakin’ A Sweat” was chosen to again to break in the already hyped fans and from that point on there was so much bass I expected the tent to collapse at any given time. The UMF Brasil tent had been crowded all weekend but when these two took over, masses of people filed in. After watching Skrillex have a killer set the night before, we weren’t sure it could be beat but the chemistry these have on stage blew our minds. Even with a minor glitch in the middle of their set, they still dropped 20+ tracks. We’ve seen Skrillex more than a handful of times and this ranks up there as one of our favorite performances.

Our coverage of the 2012 Ultra Music Festival continues after the jump!

First Thoughts
Ever since deciding to go to Miami, I had constantly been comparing it with EDC before even experiencing Ultra. For some reason, I’ve always had a love for partying through the wee-hours of the morning and not seeing the sun until departing from the festival. When we arrived in Miami, I knew I had to put these notions aside and enjoy every minute of the next 72 hours. We arrived at Bayfront Park using the overpacked, free and convenient metromover and the view was stunning. By arriving on Miami’s metromover, we had the advantage of seeing Bayfront Park as a whole. Immediately, I got the same overwhelming feeling as when I initially walked into EDC a few years back, there was so much ground to cover, so many different stages. My eyes were darting from the Main Stage to the Carl Cox & Friends Arena and even some of the small stages fixated in the outskirts of the park. Entry to the festival was 10X easier than EDC, where security guards are worse than your TSA agent. After taking in my surroundings and catching my breath, it was time to get out there and experience the hype of Ultra. We’ve got a whole lot more after the jump!

After waiting over 180 days for Ultra 2012, I’m left speechless. After spending 6 body-taxing nights in Miami, it’s hard to believe that this year’s party is finished and we’ve already begun the countdown for 2013, only 356 more days kids. We’ll be posting reviews, interviews, photos and videos from this past week, but here’s a few of some live sets from this year.

My personal favorites are from 12th Planet who went back-to-back with Skrillex for a bass-heavy hour set, Fat Boy Slim and Knife Party. For more sets from Avicii, Afrojack, Laidback Luke, Carl Cox, Cazzette, Benny Benassi and Armin Van Buuren hit the jump! All sets are available for both stream and download.
