It is extremely difficult to escape the collective known as Odd Future. Whether its’ Tyler the Creator’s antics at MTV award shows, one of the many headlines detailing incidents at their shows, or the silky voice of Frank Ocean opening up Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne LP , these guys seem to be everywhere these days. Their music has been polarizing to say the least, but there is talent among them. They aim to prove that once again with the release of The OF Tape, Vol. 2.
From the outrageous intro “Hi,” you know that their IDGAF tone is firmly cemented as the LP commences. “Bitches” is a sparse track, with Domo Genius and Hodgy Beats trade bars, as they do as well on “Lean.” Wolf Gang Leader Tyler, The Creator chimes in alongside Hodgy on “NY (Ned Flander)” The Internet offers “Ya Know,” which sounds a little too much like something N.E.R.D. would do. “Analog 2″ features the in-demand Frank Ocean, who invites a lady friend to have a “good time.” Oh, and Tyler’s also there doing what he does best. Mellowhype is a train wreck on “50,” If you’ve seen the video for “Rello,” then you may have already made up your mind about the track, but it’s not that bad. Things fare better when the guys rely less of shock value and more on their talent. That said, “White,” the solo offering from Frank Ocean, would be a standout. “Sam (Is Dead)” shows Tyler displaying the same lyrical ability that made those less familiar with him pay attention on Game’s “Martians and Goblins.” last year.
